Emergency Response Handbook (ERG2008 Users Guide)

http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/3/erg-gmu/erg/ergmenu.as...

The 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG2008) was developed jointly by Transport Canada (TC), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SCT) for use by fire fighters, police, and other emergency services personnel who may be the first to arrive at the scene of a transportation incident involving dangerous goods. It is primarily a guide to aid first responders in quickly identifying the specific or generic hazards of the material(s) involved in the incident, and protecting themselves and the general public during the initial response phase of the incident. For the purposes of the guidebook, the "initial response phase" is that period following arrival at the scene of an incident during which the presence and/or identification of dangerous goods is confirmed, protective actions and area securement are initiated, and assistance of qualified personnel is requested. It is not intended to provide information on the physical or chemical properties of dangerous goods.

The Public and Pesticides - Exploring the Interface (Ohio State University)

http://www.worldcat.org/title/public-pesticides-exploring-th...

Expectations are high among agricultural groups that our society knows, understands, and appreciates what is involved in meeting the nation's vast food and fiber needs. In reality, the public does not have a clear understanding of the production system and in particular how agriculture and science interact to do this job. There are public expectations about what is required in meeting standards for food quality and safety. In general, the public seems to be asking, "What are you doing for us about this?" This report is based on the belief that there must be greater professional and personal attention to relationships among our multifactorial stakeholder society. The findings will be best used as a discovery or discussion document. Arguments about pesticides, pro or con, are not a subject for this report. It is about improved relationships and dialogue leading to a better informed public and better public policy decisions.

Agricultural Buffers - City of Brentwood, California

http://www.ci.brentwood.ca.us/boards/aarg/enterprise/agricul...

Both the City of Brentwood and Contra Costa County (California, USA) have provisions in their general plans and other planning documents that support the implementation of agricultural buffers. While the City does not have a formal standard that governs the design or size of agricultural buffers, in practice, the buffers that have been implemented have ranged from 100 to 300 feet. The County’s practices on buffers have been primarily implemented by the County Agricultural Commissioner in the form of spray restrictions on agricultural parcels. These restrictions require no spraying in an area on selected agricultural parcel that can range from 100 to 500 feet from the edge of the property. The actual width is based on the specific chemical applied, the prevailing wind conditions and the presence of sensitive adjacent land uses (such as schools). In cases in which a non-restricted chemical is being applied, a cooperative agreement is often developed with the grower to adapt spraying schedules and notify neighbors to minimize impacts on surrounding areas.

Aerial application of clopyralid demonstrates little drift potential and low toxicity to toads.

http://californiaagriculture.ucanr.org/landingpage.cfm?artic...

A research article published in California Agriculture (Univ. of California) magazine, Vol. 58, No 3., 2004. Written by Joseph M. DiTomaso, Jessica R. Miller, Guy B. Kyser, Art W. Hazebrook, Joel Trumbo, David Valcore and Vanelle F. Carrithers. Abstract -- "The herbicide clopyralid (Transline) is commonly applied by air to control yellow starthistle, a noxious weed, in California. In laboratory studies, clopyralid toxicity in Fowler’s toad was low, indicating a wide safety margin when used under field conditions. In addition, monitoring of clopyralid drift following aerial application demonstrated that 98-foot (30-meter) buffers between treatment areas and water sources provided adequate drift protection for an adjacent stream and vernal pools. Nevertheless, to ensure that movement of the herbicide to water sources is minimized, it is important to prevent application error, particularly accidental encroachment into established buffer zones. This study demonstrated that drift potential for clopyralid was minimal even with an aerial application and a slight downwind breeze toward sensitive aquatic sites. It is also the first report demonstrating a high tolerance to clopyralid in larval toads." Provides a valuable insight into the use of buffer zones to reduce pesticide spray drift.

EPA Endangered Species Protection Program

http://www.epa.gov/oppfead1/endanger/

Although the Office of Pesticide Programs has included endangered species considerations in its risk assessments for many years, the ESPP, as an entity, started in 1988. It is largely voluntary at the present time and relies on cooperation between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), EPA Regions, States, and pesticide users. The limitations on pesticide use on this site are not law at this time, but are being provided now for your use in voluntarily protecting endangered species from harm due to pesticide use. We encourage you to use this information. We also welcome your comments. The Endangered Species Act is intended to protect and promote the recovery of animals and plants that are in danger of becoming extinct due to the activities of people. Under the Act, EPA must ensure that use of pesticides it registers will not result in harm to the species listed as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or to habitat critical to those species' survival. To implement the ESPP, labels of certain pesticides will direct users to bulletins with information similar to what appears here. This program will protect endangered and threatened species from harm due to pesticide use.

Green Light

http://www.greenlightco.com/

Since 1947, Green Light® Company has provided quality lawn and garden products. Founded as the Klauss-White Company, we serviced the needs of homeowners, ranchers, farmers and pest control operators. As consumer demand for Green Light® began to grow in the early 1950's, products like our Bug & Snail Bait in small package sizes were added to the line. In years to follow, the introduction of new, innovative products such as Liquid Edger, Double Duty Rose & Flower Care, Root Stimulator and our 3-Step Flea & Tick Control Program contributed to Green Light®'s growth. In 1959, the company officially changed its name from Klauss-White to the Green Light® Company. After relocating to a new manufacturing facility, we continued to expand our product line to meet the growing needs of homeowners for liquid and dry insecticides, plant foods, herbicides, rodenticides and gardening accessories. Green Light®'s philosophy for safety also developed - with a strong sense of responsibility in packaging. Features such as shatterproof HDPE bottles, foil induction seals, child resistant closures and recyclable packaging became components in our "Safety Plus" program. Today Green Light® offers a full range of lawn and garden products for the consumer. Our distribution strength is in the Sunbelt states and West Coast - however some products are offered on a national basis. Green Light®'s goal is to provide effective, environmentally responsible products for the homeowner and gardener.

Buffers - planning for sustainable agriculture | NSW Department of Primary Industries

http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/search?q=buffer+agricultural

The purpose of a buffer is to separate conflicting land use activities and thereby lessen the potential impact of one activity or series of activities on an adjoining activity or land user. In land use planning, "activities" are typically land uses of one form or another and the manner in which those land uses are undertaken. Agriculture is a series of industries and activities that can be in conflict with adjoining land uses: * the common ‘clash’ between residential use and agriculture; * conflict between agricultural enterprises (e.g. ‘organic’ versus ‘non-organic’); * conflict between agriculture and sensitive environments such as waterways, native habitats, wetlands, schools and public places.
