Early Days of the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station

Established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1886, the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station was located on the 283 acre campus of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (VAMC) (later named Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), and today - Virginia Tech).

Station Personnel - 1926 to 1937

Faculty were hired in specifically as station faculty during the first years of the station.

Employees of the Experiment Station during the years 1926 to 1937.

DRINKARD, ALFRED WASHINGTON, JR. (1883-1962). DIARY, 1947. 0.1 cu. ft. Director of Agricultural Experiment Station, 1917-1945; assistant director of Agricultural Experiment Station, 1945 until his retirement in 1948. Collection consists of a Daily Desk Diary, which mentions persons and events in Blacksburg and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Ms96-019

 

GARNETT, WILLIAM E. (1886-1970). PAPERS, 1936-69, n.d. 0.1 cu. ft. Professor of Rural Sociology at Agricultural Experiment Station, 1925-56. Helped establish the Virginia Agriculture Conference Board and the Virginia Medical and Health Care Council. Papers consist of field notes, surveys, reports, class notes, letters to the editors of Montgomery County,Virginia, newspapers, and reprints of publications. Ms73- 011.

 

HILL, HENRY HARRIS (1880-1954). PAPERS, 1821-1948. 0.6 cu. ft. Received B.S. (1907) and M.S. (1909) in chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Became chemist in 1907 for the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and eventually head of the Agricultural Chemistry department at VPI before retiring in 1950. He also served as executive secretary of the VPI Alumni Association. The collection includes items about VPI athletics from 916-24, biographical and genealogical materials, papers about the Civil War, and materials on Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, and Southwest Virginia history. Ms80-003.

 

HUTCHESON, JOHN R. (1886-1962). PAPERS, 1922-1962. 5.4 cu. ft. Graduated from Virginia Tech (B.A. in Science, 1907; M.A. in Science, 1909). Served as livestock specialist with the Virginia Agricultural Extension Service, 1914-19, director of Extension Service, 1919-44. Ninth President of Virginia Tech, 1945-47; Chancellor of Virginia Tech, 1947-56. Papers consist of file folders of personal correspondence and records, concentrating mostly on the years following his presidency until his death. PRICE, HARVEY LEE (1874-1951). PAPERS, 1930-45. 1.4 cu. ft. Obtained his B.S. in 1898 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and became a faculty member in the Horticulture Department (1900-50) and a School of Agriculture administrator (1908-48). Descendant of early Montgomery County, Virginia, settlers. Price had a strong avocational interest in genealogy and local history, and wrote Outlines Of Montgomery County Families (1940) which, though never published, has proved a valuable source for genealogists and historians. Collection includes Price's extensive notes and correspondence which provided much of the information for his book. Ms75-001.

 

SHEAR, GEORGE MYRON. PAPERS, 1927, 1968-80. 0.2 cu. ft. Plant physiologist (1930-49) at the Agricultural Experiment Station and Professor of Plant Physiology (1949-70). Papers consist of correspondence and publications relating to his research as a plant physiologist, and particularly on his work with watercress. Includes correspondence (1927) with Thomas A. Edison about Shear's work concerning collections latex-bearing plants in Virginia. Ms88-006.

 

UNDERHILL, GROVER WILLIAM. PAPERS, 1935. 0.1 cu. ft. Professor of Entomology, 1918-54. Collection consists of a radio talk entitled "Insect Menace to Log Cabins and Rustic Woodwork" that was given by Underhill on 17 September 1935. Ms87-014.


YOUNG, HAROLD N. (1895-1978). PAPERS, 1938-66, n.d. 0.1 cu. ft. Professor of Agricultural Economics (1930-65); Director of the Virginia Agricultural Experment Station (1946-65). Educated at Cornell University (1913-17). Sergeant in Intelligence Section, 38th Infantry, in World War I. Principal of Union School in Constableville, New York (1919-30). Collection includes papers by Young on such topics as "Targets And Responsibilities [For The VAES]," "Liberty and Responsibility," "Needed--A New Water Law in Virginia," "Some Reflections on Public Education in Virginia,"and "VPI, The General Education Board and Related Topics." Also includes a poem, "Charge of the Night Brigade" by Young. Ms70-007.

 

Michael Smith Kipps (AGRN '23, M.S. '26), 9/23/96. Kipps, 95, of Blacksburg, was a professor of agronomy at Virginia Tech from 1930-1967. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy. Contributions may be made to the Michael S. Kipps Scholarship Fund, Va. Tech Foundation, 201 Pack Building, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
