Exemplary Pesticide Programs

Annual pesticide programming excellence awards are sponsored by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. These are presented at the annual pesticide safety educators workshop to teams and individuals who are nominated by their peers for their excellent programs in pesticide safety, disposal and recycling throughout Virginia.

Awards Program

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) has recognized Virginia Cooperative Extension agents throughout Virginia for their outstanding participation in the pesticide container recycling program and the pesticide safety education courses. The following is the most recent nomination guidelines and forms:

2016 Awards Program

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is again sponsoring the Virginia Cooperative Extension Recognition Awards Program.  Awards will be given for outstanding pesticide safety education programs (first, second and third place), and pesticide disposal and plastic pesticide container recycling programs which took place between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016

Award winners in the pesticide safety education program category are selected from nominations made by VCE Agents, Specialists, District Directors and staff along with OPS Pesticide Investigators.  This is your opportunity to recognize an outstanding coworker!  All types of pesticide safety programs are eligible including recertification programs as well as those designed to prepare prospective applicators for certification exams and programs for non-certified audiences.

To be considered for the award, a program conducted by an agent or group of agents must be nominated.  A nomination form and award program guidelines are attached.  Nominations should explain how the safety education program excelled in each of five areas;

  • Effectiveness in delivery of information;
  • Innovative training techniques used;
  • Teaching new information;
  • Access to the pesticide safety education program; and,
  • Pesticide safety education program evaluation.

An individual may not nominate him/herself; however, an agent who assisted with a program may nominate the team leader.

All nominations will be initially reviewed by the Nominations Committee for completeness and forwarded to the Selections Committee.  The Selections Committee is comprised of Office of Pesticide Services, Virginia Tech Pesticide Programs and Virginia Cooperative Extension representatives. Awards will be presented at the 2016 VCE Pesticide Safety Educators' Workshop.  The winners will receive a plaque commemorating the award and a basket of Virginia's Finest Products.  Nominations are due by July 18, 2016 and should be sent directly to:
